Have your accommodation on hand!
I always write down on paper the name, address, and phone number of my accommodation (or grab the business card/ask front desk to write it down). That way if my phone dies, I get lost or I’m in a cab and can’t communicate with a driver, I can hand it to them and I can get back home. Make sure to write down your very first accommodation before you leave on the trip, you can usually find all the details in the confirmation email they send. This trick has proved very helpful for me many times!
Personal Alarm
I’ve learned that most tourist crimes are crimes of opportunity, meaning the harder you make it look to steal from you, the less likely they will target you. On top of always keeping locks on my bags, I carry a birdie personal alarm with me at all times. It’s TSA approved so you can take it on flights with you, and it makes a hell of a sound (and strobe light) when pulled, which certainly helps deter criminals as it draws lots of attention to you. I carry mine around town even when I’m at home too. Stay safe out there y’all!
